Jeff Derby

BULLRIDER - COWBOY - ADVENTURER
CAREER:

Jeff is a lifelong student of horsemanship. His involvement with horses began at a very early age on his grandfather’s cattle farm in rural Ohio, and horses have been an enormous part of his life ever since.

After college Jeff focused on riding bulls, making his living for the next half dozen years by competing on the Pro Rodeo circuit. Even then, he continued to ride horses for the public during the less busy times of the rodeo season.

Being a lifelong student comes from a joy for learning, and with that comes a passion for teaching, as well. Jeff truly enjoys sharing what he has learnt and works well for him with others; the approaches that gain positive feedback and responses from the horse. It is very satisfying seeing that come about for others. Knowing that he has helped somebody else get on to something good for themselves and their horses is about as rewarding as it gets for him.

Jeff Derby and 3777:

As a retired bull rider, cowboy, and classical horsemanship specialist, I resonate deeply with the 3777 movement. This movement embraces the reality that we are all going to die someday, using the awareness of death as a catalyst to pursue our dreams fearlessly. My life in the rodeo, filled with the raw unpredictability of bull riding and the disciplined grace of horsemanship, has taught me the value of living fully in each moment.

For me, acknowledging life’s finite nature fuels a more meaningful existence, aligning perfectly with the core philosophy of 3777. The movement’s emphasis on seizing each day and cherishing our limited time inspires me deeply. It’s a reminder that life is precious and fleeting, encouraging us to live with purpose and passion every single day.

The GALLERY

Jeff Derby is a classical horsemanship specialist

Classical horsemanship is an art form steeped in tradition, elegance, and discipline. It dates back centuries, with roots in ancient Greece and the courts of European nobility. This style emphasizes a harmonious relationship between horse and rider, focusing on balance, precision, and subtle communication.

At the heart of classical horsemanship is the philosophy that the rider should work with the horse, not against it. The rider’s commands are gentle, almost invisible, guiding the horse with subtle shifts in weight, legs, and hands. The goal is to create a partnership where the horse responds willingly and gracefully.

Training begins with the basics: teaching the horse to move forward, stop, and turn with ease. As horse and rider progress, they move on to more complex maneuvers like the piaffe, a trot in place, and the passage, a highly collected trot. Each movement is executed with precision, showcasing the horse’s athleticism and the rider’s skill.

Jeff Derby is one of the leaders in this field, known for his mastery and dedication. Classical horsemanship is not just about technique; it is about understanding and respecting the horse. It requires patience, consistency, and a deep connection with the animal. Riders often spend years perfecting their craft, striving for the seamless elegance seen in classical dressage competitions.

In this discipline, every ride is a dance, a testament to the timeless bond between horse and rider, where tradition meets artistry in perfect harmony.
